I'm probably one of six people on the planet who preferred Spider-Man 3 to Spider-Man 2. The second Spider-Man picture is arguably the better film. It's better written, better acted, and contains moments of real pathos and drama (Aunt May's birthday present to Peter, Peter confessing his role in Uncle Ben's death, the train action-scene, Peter's conversations with Doctor Octavius). Yet it is derailed by the fact that Peter Parker spends the entire movie in a swirl of self-pity, endlessly moping for the girl he loves, while forgetting the fact that he dumped her first at the conclusion of the first film (nevermind that most of his other problems have pretty obvious solutions – move in with Aunt May and take your Spider-Man photos to other newspapers for money, etc). The third film, by virtue of having three hundred subplots, focuses less on the annoying Peter Parker/Mary Jane romantic plot, and is less forehead-slappingly obnoxious despite the kitchen-sink plotting. So while the Twilight Saga: Eclipse is not as focused and disciplined as Twilight Saga: New Moon, I did enjoy it a bit more due to the plentiful distractions from the Bella/Edward/Jacob arc. It's not nearly as fun and light-on-its feet as the first Twilight picture, but it's a case of improvement-by-default.

A token amount of plot – Edward and Bella are back together, much to the chagrin of Bella's father (the again-delightful Billy Burke) and Jacob (the native-American/werewolf who helped her recover from being dumped by Edward in the last film). As Bella decides whether or not to become a vampire in order to be with Edward forever, an old threat rears her head. In order to avenge the death of her mate at the hands of the Cullen clan back in Twilight, Victoria (Byrce Dallas Howard replacing Rachelle Lefevre) is breeding an army of 'newborn' vampires (vampires are most powerful and out of control during their initial months after being turned) to kill Bella, wipe out the Cullen clan, and/or rampage their way into Forks, Washington. With a threat this severe, the Cullen clan will be forced to align themselves with the local Quileute tribe, who of course are also werewolves.

Obviously, there is a little bit more going on here than just a non-stop pity party for Bella. And, ironically, the character work ends up mirroring the Peter Parker progression as well. Mirroring Peter's struggle to win back Mary Jane in Spider-Man 2, Bella spent the second film drowning in self-pity after Edward dumped her. But in this film, she's got her man, so she's become a bit more of self-centered jerk. Just as Peter Parker became cocky and obnoxious once he got what he wanted, so too does Bella. This time around, she basically uses her desirability as a weapon, using Jacob's infatuation to make Edward jealous for no particular reason. And while Edward was merely a little creepy in the first film, and mainly absent in the second, here he comes off like a controlling, jealous, and easily angered obsessive. Yes, Bella generally doesn't stand for his overt 'protectiveness', but Eddie still comes off like a future domestic-abuser more so than the first two pictures. Our three leads are still relatively bland and not-terribly personable, so whenever the film focuses on their romantic plight, the picture becomes frankly a little dull.

Much has been written, by myself and others, about the theoretically terrible morals that this series teaches young girls about romance and self-esteem. But I will say that the film seems to almost be questioning, if not condemning, Bella's choice to leave behind her friends and family to live with her vampire boyfriend. Even Edward is very much against Bella becoming a vampire, and any number of characters (Jacob, Rosalie Hale, Bella's unknowing parents) make quite convincing cases for why she should not go on this path. It doesn't help that Bella slightly more chemistry with Jacob than with Edward, but of course the idea of her choosing neither of these men and simply going to college isn't even an option to her. Anna Kendrick's Jessica gets a valedictorian speech that all-but explicitly mocks the very story that has been told up to this point in the series. Point being, whether it's Stephenie Meyer's source material or director David Slade's directorial hand, Bella's single-minded pursuit of Edward is not presented as the picture-perfect that one might expect from a series that has been sold as wish-fulfillment fantasy.

As is the case with the prior two pictures, the film comes to life whenever someone other than Bella, Jacob, or Edward takes center stage. I wrote back in my Twilight review that I loved the supporting characters, and that still stands. By virtue of being about more than just Bella obsessing over Edward, this film allows said supporting cast to shine a bit more. A few of the Cullen family members are given flashbacks showing how they became vampires (Jackson Hale was turned while fighting for Texas in the Civil War, although Jackson Rathbone is not allowed to give his opinion on slavery). Bella's mother (Sarah Clarke) is given one extended moment of motherly warmth, and Sheriff Charlie again stands in for an uncomfortable audience as he helplessly watches his daughter disappear into the Cullen family (his 'sex talk' is highly amusing, and the pay-off is a corker). The problem is as it always has been with this series. The game lead actors (Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner) are forced to be relatively blank slates, so that the reader can imagine themselves as their favorite character, while the rest of the cast get to be distinct human beings (undead or otherwise).

Whether or not the film is 'better', it certainly is a more entertaining picture than the dreary New Moon. There are moments of (generally bloodless) violence, and there is a brief climactic action-blow out to satisfy carnage junkies. The film has superior production values and the period flashbacks combined with brief excursions into downtown Seattle add a bit of variety to the backwoods locales. It's still not 'big' enough to justify the IMAX upgrade, although the film's dramatic scenes are often shot in extreme close-up, so those that want ginormous and super-detailed looks at their favorite hottie might do well to pay the surcharge (everyone in this movie looks gorgeous and there is plenty of eye candy regardless of your sexual preference). The supporting cast is given more time to shine, and the Cullen family remains as entertaining as ever. The film's morality is just as awkward it has always been, but there are signs that the material isn't as regressive as it's been painted (regardless, I still think that our young girls can handle a little escapist fantasy and still keep their self-esteem). Like the Spider-Man series, this third film is less streamlined and less disciplined than the second entry, but the emphasis on the entire Twilight world vs. exclusively focusing on Bella's love triangle makes this entry superior entertainment. And like Rami's webslinging adventures, the first film is still the best.

Grade: B-

The Twilight movies have always been huge moneymakers (the first Twilight grossed over $190 million domestically, and New Moon added another $100 million to that number with a $290 million intake), and based on the current track record of Eclipse ($175 million in its first week of release), it doesn’t look like the studios have much to worry about with the final two entries in the series. And it’s not like the cast wasn’t an integral part of these films’ success. All three leads have served the franchise very well in bringing in viewers, with Stewart appropriately filling the role of a blank slate in which young girls can envision themselves, and the competing love interests of male hotties Pattinson and Lautner being the reason why they’d want to. Andrew Garfield, meanwhile, is completely unknown to mainstream audiences, and is not likely to draw in many viewers when Spider-Man hits theaters. Hollywood isn’t paying these actors relative to their acting ability; they’re paying them relative to their box office draw.

It’s unfortunate, but sensible.

Even so, the amount they’re getting paid seems pretty extreme. Summit had an amazing thing going with the Twilight franchise’s budget to gross ratio, with all three films costing less than $70 million to make. Now, the actor salaries alone exceed that.

At a whopping $25 million each (not counting what they’re earning in addition), the three young actors are already among the highest paid of all time. They’re comparable even to the Harry Potter cast, who had previously earned that same title following the most recent Potter outings. Emma Watson commanded $15 million each on the last two released films, and Daniel Radcliffe reportedly made around $50 million for the upcoming Deathly Hallows films.

Let that sink in a moment. These kids are still in their early 20s, and they’ve already made more than any of us will make our whole lives. Depressing, isn’t it?

New Twilight: Eclipse movie clips aired during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! « Twilight Saga: Total Eclipse of the Heart » special, and the cast engaged in mildly amusing banter. Twilight fans excited to see the Twilight: Eclipse cast together for their only primetime appearance may have been happy, but those looking to hear Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson drone on would be miserably disappointed. Kristen, Rob and Taylor actually spoke little during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! « Twilight Saga: Total Eclipse of the Heart » special, perhaps choosing to let their co-stars soak up a little more of the spotlight than they typically receive.

The highlight of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! « Twilight Saga: Total Eclipse of the Heart » special came during a comedy skit featuring Snooki of the Jersey Shore as Bella in a Guido-fied version of Twilight: Eclipse. The clip was rather well done, complete with tanning-bed coffins draped in the Italian flag, six-packs that twinkled in the sunlight and the requisite tequila shots. The spoof skit closed the with the title of the 'film' flashing on the screen: « Friggin' Twilight ».

This past weekend saw our family going in two directions simultaneously. My daughter wanted to see the new Twilight film and my son wanted to see The Last Airbender. Between seeing both of those films I'd have to say that Twilight: Eclipse has done a much better job of pulling audiences in emotionally than Shyamalan's remake of a Nickelodeon cartoon.

Directed by relative newcomer David Slade, Eclipse is the third movie based upon Stephane Meyer's Twilight saga of young adult books. The story follows the love, romance, and eventual marriage of vampire Edward Cullen to mere mortal Bella Swan in the state of Washington. Eclipse builds up the drama and tension as Swan is about to graduate from high school and has a choice to make between vampire Cullen or werewolf Jacob Black as to who will be the recipient of her affections.

Review

My daughter has indeed read the books, much like she did for Harry Potter and knows every detail, every plot twist, and every departure from the books into the films. This film was no different for her as my daughter loved the teenager-ish longing for forbidden love, being fought over by two men, and even being swept off her feet by a strong male presence.

When David Slade's work is done, you can tell he paid attention to the source material without sacrificing too much or skimping on details. As with any book-to-movie interpretation, directors and writers must summarize the feel of the book and condense it into two or three hours (see Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings). Slade does an excellent job of respecting Meyer's work while making Eclipse his own.

As Bella inches ever closer to her choice of romance with Edward or her childhood friend Jacob who's been crushing on her most of her life, things get hairier when other vampires seek vengeance upon the Cullen clan. Having a subplot of family fights amongst forbidden lovers is nothing new to books or moviemaking (see Jane Austen's works), so as far as making realistic sense to complicated themes Slade and Meyer both have done well to bring those points home.

Overtones

Despite the scores of family battles and approving or disproving of someone based upon their background, the main thrust of the film comes down to what is more important. Is being romantically in love more important than friendship? In the case of Bella, either one will be a choice that lasts forever since she will end up with an immortal no matter which way she leans.

Fans of the book series have already discovered how she answers this choice. In my own situation, I was lucky enough to have both. My wife is both my romantic partner and best friend all into one. When it comes down to it, we would rather be with each other even if we aren't being lovey-dovey and over the moon with each other.

Bella ultimately has to make the same choice despite family pressures, fighting, and even the possibility of her love being disowned by his kind and becoming an outcast. All of this is for love and eternal happiness with a soulmate. We've all heard this before in Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, and so on and so forth. The only thing Bella and Edward have to decide is whether or not to give up their souls for each other even though they will stay as living, breathing beings.

For those of us lucky enough to have found love, Twilight: Eclipse is a reminder of the constant work we have to do to maintain it. For that, Twilight's third installment in the movie franchise is a success even though it's in the guise of an all-out vampire movie. Girls will love the wedding dress and the hunky Taylor Lautner even if many critics fail to see the appeal of this film.

Twilight series newest movie, Eclipse, is due out next month and the news of last minute re-shoots, have fans worried that the original release date of June 30th will be changed, according to RadarOnline.

Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and Kristen Stewart have all just returned from Vancouver after finishing re-shoots that were called « last minute ».

Twilight Eclipse should be pretty much wrapped up in the editing department at this time, so when fans heard they were still shooting scenes to appear in the movie, worries arose that they would have to wait longer to see the much anticipated third installment of the Twilight series.

Rumors are flying around from the Twilight Eclipse world of blogging of a kissing scene needing toning down and some more action plugged into the action scenes with these re-shoots.

Will Twilight's Eclipse be released on time? The company that produces the Twilight franchise, Summit Entertainment, is telling the fans to calm down. The movie will open on June 30th, just as it is scheduled to.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse trailer will debut in front of Remember Me on March 12th. The first Twilight: Eclipse trailer will be a Robert Pattinson asset as it will probably help the draw for his first major release since Twilight became a huge hit. Remember Me is a different kind of love story for actor Pattinson and will show whether or not he can lead a film that isn't about vampires and werewolves. But there is obviously going to be a lot of tie-ins between the Twilight franchise and Remember Me, beginning on the first night when the first viewings of the Eclipse trailer will start to take place. It could turn out to be a really smart move by the production company.

Summit Entertainment made the smart decision to cast one of its biggest assets in Remember Me, and though the film may have slipped under the radar for many theater goers, it is a hot topic for Pattinson fans all around the world. Summit Entertainment knew they could create another film to build off of the Twilight buzz that Pattinson has been getting in recent years. Lost fans will recognize actress Emilie de Ravin as the love interest in the film, and it is also good to see her stretch her acting talents as well. The ultimate question though, will be whether the film can stand on its own, or if it turns out that the only reason its gets good box office receipts are the tie-ins to Twilight.

So can the combination of a new Robert Pattinson movie and the premiere of the Twilight: Eclipse trailer lead to an increase in box office revenues for Remember Me? It isn't the first time that a movie has tried to create more buzz for itself by playing a trailer that everyone wanted to see. When the new Star Wars trilogy was getting released, the first trailer was announced to be showing in front of a movie, and people bought tickets just to go see the trailer and then leave the theater. That probably won't happen here because fans will want to see Pattinson in another type of love story, but it is the same concept of getting people through the door.

Come this June and the third movie of The Twilight Saga series will hit the theatres. It is going to be just a perfect thriller and entertainer for the moviegoers, particularly the teenagers.
