A Different SUV for my Dad

My old man just returned his Toyota 4Runner and is looking to lease a new one. He already made clear that this drive was a little taxing on his back and that it had way too much engine capacity for Florida… Now he's on the lookout for a 4 cylinder or a small 6, and it must be SUV in view of the fact that he does mountain biking, etc… and this is the solitary large vehicle in the house, I used his car numerous times to transport possessions from one place to another since I drive a Honda Accord and my wife a Beetle.
Nonetheless, the cost; it's without doubt less than US $28k taking into account taxes & fees.
He liked the Mazda CX7, but it does not have a sufficient amount bite, the Turbo variant has admirable power and drives well, but for that much he thinks he could get something else.
He chanced upon a great bargain at turbocharged 4-cylinder engine 200-hp 2.0-liter Volkswagen Passat … but he has a reliability concern ever since our Audi Q7 and VW Beetle were constantly breaking down. I suggested that through a 36-month contract he shouldn't face any problems (in contrast to owning the Audi just as he did for over 6 years).
Next there is the contemporary Chevrolet Equinox, a pretty darn good vehicle, you can smell superiority all over if you choose to explore this car… Dad even said that he might have bought the car by now if not for the extremely obnoxious salesperson… I feel after taxes it reaches $32k or so, however he does seem to enjoy the car a lot.
He used the Toyota FJ Cruiser (4 cylinders) and was of the opinion that it drove quite badly… I didn't get to examine that one, although he seems to be convinced that his new SUV will not be a Toyota.
If you know of any nice options which he can look into while not having to shell out a ridiculous amount of money, your suggestions are more than welcome.
